Seniors for Seniors is the newest adoption drive at the Bella Vista Animal Shelter.
Any person aged 60 years or older can adopt a pet that is at least 7 years of age
at no charge. The idea was brought back from California by volunteer coordinator
Charlie Breitzke. He read about the idea in a newspaper when visiting his sister
in Pasadena.
“In a lot of cases, senior dogs are more appropriate to senior people.
(The animals) are housebroken, usually past their chewing stage and not as energetic.
It just makes good sense,” said Deidre Knight, executive director of the shelter.
Shelter manager Donna Miles agrees.
“Generally, (older cats and dogs) are calmer,
more easygoing,” Miles said. Recognizing that most seniors are on fixed incomes,
Knight believes this program might make a pet affordable. Instead of an adoption
fee, the money can be spent on food, toys, collars — all the necessary items for
a pet. Miles pointed out that pet owners should have a contingency plan should they
become incapable of caring for an animal. “Don’t assume that your spouse or children
will automatically take your pets; they may be allergic, too busy or just not like
your cat,” Miles said. “Consider the longevity of your pet — and yourself — and make
the proper arrangements.”
There are numerous animals at the shelter that need the
extra attention an older person can give. Older animals are usually at the top of
the list for euthanizing at animal shelters, should it become necessary because of
overcrowding.
All pets adopted through the Seniors for Seniors program will be spayed or neutered
and have a microchip implanted. The animals also will have been wormed and received
their first series of shots. A free veterinarian check is included.
Potential adopters
must complete an application and are subject to approval. The Bella Vista Animal
Shelter is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To adopt any of the
cats or dogs at the shelter, visit 32 Bella Vista Way, or call 855-6020.
